Brewers notes & comments from Ash – ‘If you go online to 2mt.com.au, there is a video of an address given by me at the GROW Assembly Conference in Melbourne way back in 2016. During the presentation I was berating the supposed magnificent uniqueness of the grape and its miraculous ability to ‘apparently’ be the only member of the fruit & vegetable kingdom from which complex, food-friendly, age-worthy, sophisticated, fermented beverages could be made.

“Be damned!” I exclaimed. “’Orange wines’ could be made from carrots” ... or pumpkins even! And with an exaggerated waving of the arms, I threw down the gauntlet upon myself in a very public forum and so seeded the challenge. In all seriousness, this is where my fascination for brewing over winemaking is centred – beer being the result of multi-ingredient fermentation whereas wine is restricted to one fruit, the grape – and it was a particularly delicious encounter in Austria with a pumpkin soup dressed in a phenomenally complex pumpkin seed oil a lifetime ago which lay at the heart of this desire to attempt something with pumpkins. Not to mention a ready supply grown ‘just down the road’ from us by Johnny Windsor. It’s very late autumn 2016; pumpkin time! The next bit was a leap of faith and some good ‘ol farmer ingenuity ... the pumpkins were literally run over in my tractor until they had been smashed to pieces; skin, flesh, seeds ... the lot! Over the ensuing years, my ‘way’ of dealing with this project has evolved substantially which has produced much batch variation, but the constant has been the starting point; 50% Tasmanian grown malted barley and 50% whole
